Houston Chronicle    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Americans' views on gun laws have remained relatively constant even in the wake of recent mass shootings, according to the latest national survey by the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press. The deadly shooting in an Aurora, Colo. movie theater — despite calls from both sides of the political spectrum not to politicize the event — seems to have had no effect on the ongoing debate over gun control and gun rights. Houston uses video to teach how to handle shooting
The Associated Press via WLNE-TV    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Ominous music plays as a man in dark clothing, sunglasses and a backpack walks toward people working in a high-rise building. The narrator's voice warns: "It may feel like just another day at the office, but occasionally life feels more like an action movie." It's the beginning of a nearly six-minute video created by the City of Houston in an effort to teach residents what to do during a shooting. Local Homeland Security officials said they realized during training exercises that first responders knew how to react but citizens were far less knowledgeable. Its release was expedited following the recent movie theater shooting in Aurora, Colo. More

West Texas gun enthusiasts say more laws won't stop violent acts
KOSA-TV    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
At the recent Silver Spur Trade Show in Midland, Texas, hundreds of gun enthusiasts spent the day trading, selling and buying guns. Since the Aurora, Colo., movie theater shooting, the debate on gun control has heated up. West Texans at the show are holding strong to their belief that problem isn't the current gun laws. "It's bad what happened. It's not the gun's fault. It's not the caliber of the gun. It's not the type of weapon that was used, the ammunition and the magazines. It was the person behind it,” said gun vendor Ray Johnson. More

What do health care, gun control and cybersecurity have in common? Nothing. Unless you're the U.S. Senate. Debate in the chamber over a bill designed to boost American cybersecurity got off to an inauspicious start recently as members of both parties sought to attach hot-button amendments on issues such as health care and gun control. What NYC mayor Bloomberg doesn't know about police and guns
The Wall Street Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
In the wake of the recent mass shooting in Colorado, New York mayor Michael Bloomberg called on police to join him in fighting for more gun control: "I don't understand why the police officers across this country don't stand up collectively and say we're going to go on strike." It is illegal for police to go on strike, and Bloomberg later backed off his statement. But the mayor is just as far off the mark in his assumption that police agree with him on gun control. More

Gun control advocates target high-capacity magazines
USA Today    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The Colorado theater shootings thrust assault weapons, such as the AR-15 semiautomatic rifle used in the rampage, into the national spotlight. Equally important in the gun control debate — and often overlooked — are the high-capacity magazines used to fuel the firepower in mass shootings, gun control advocates say. More

The Wall Street Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Talks at the United Nations over a potential treaty limiting the illicit flow of weapons recently ended without a deal. Ban Ki-Moon, the U.N. secretary general, lamented the fact that nations couldn’t agree on common standards to regulate the arms trade across borders, calling the lack of a conclusion a "setback." For the deal to be struck, all 193 U.N. nations had to agree on the text of the agreement. More

Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn recently proposed a ban on assault weapons in the state in the aftermath of the movie theater massacre in Colorado in which a former graduate student is charged with killing 12 people with guns including a semi-automatic rifle. Quinn, a Democrat, called himself a "strong supporter" of the constitutional right to bear arms, but said in a letter to state legislators that the proliferation of military-style assault weapons undermines public safety.
