The gun debate in the U.S. may never end, but opinion polls show most Americans want stricter gun laws. In a recent move, an alliance of organizations representing police chiefs and executives said they would strongly support universal background checks for firearms purchases. Currently, only licensed dealers have to insist on background checks, but firearms sold through private parties or gun shows do not require any checks and constitute 40 percent of total gun sales.

Teaching security strategies to those who oversee our courts is a crucial part of helping keep state and local court judges safe. Judge Mark Atkinson, CEO of the non-profit Texas Center for the Judiciary in Austin, an educational group for court judges, said it's a priority to make sure newly elected judges overseeing sometimes emotional cases involving crimes, bankruptcy and child custody disputes attend seminars on staying safe both on the bench and while they're away from it. Topics in security seminars range from home protection tips like having good exterior lighting to changing up travel routines, even whether to carry a concealed weapon.

A 13-year-old Ladson, South Carolina boy fended off two would-be burglars by using his mother’s gun to protect himself while home alone. He killed one of them in an exchange of gunfire, and the second suspect was later arrested, according to the Charleston County Sheriff's Office.

A man has been charged in the home invasion and shooting of a North Carolina mom. Semantha Bunce, 21, a combat medic in the National Guard, was in her Charlotte home breast-feeding her 4-month-old son in her bedroom when intruders barged in, according to CNN affiliate WSOC. As the intruders broke into the home and opened fire, Bunce fired back with her own weapon.

The next step was to fire several hundred rounds through it to verify reliability.
