Texas Senator proposes new gun law

If West Texas state Senator Charles Perry gets his way, the minimum caliber gun needed in a concealed handgun license course would decrease from a .32 caliber to a .22 caliber. "Twenty-two's were excluded for qualifications on CHL purposes," Perry said. "Nobody has actually been able to give a good reason why." Perry said the change could make it easier for women to get their license.

East Texas state rep proposes bill allowing open carry for prosecutors

When the Texas Legislature meets for the 84th time next January, they will consider a bill that would allow prosecutors to openly carry firearms for protection. Right now, prosecutors are allowed to carry a concealed weapon to work. If this bill passes, it would give prosecutors a choice to open carry. One East Texas legislator wants to change courthouse security after the 2013 murders of two Kaufman County prosecutors.

Number of women getting CHLs doubles

Every other Wednesday night Red’s Indoor Gun Range in South Austin is hoppin’. Every bay is usually taken by women. It hasn’t always been this way. “Every week there would be just me and then one week there would be two of us,” said Nikki Jones who founded Sure Shots, a women’s gun club that got its start back in 2005 when Jones moved from New York to Austin and got her concealed handgun license. “The difference between the amount of women who were shooting and now is just off the charts,” she said.

FDIC and DOJ to investigate Operation Choke Point

Both the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation and the Department of Justice will review their involvement in Operation Choke Point, a mass-market fraud prevention initiative that’s caught flak for its expansive list of “high risk” merchants. Texas training school employees to be undercover, armed marshals

Although many Texas schools use armed school resource officers to directly respond to active shooter situations, but some schools are now considering to license current employees — such as a teacher — to carry a concealed handgun through the state’s school marshal program. Texas passed the school marshal law shortly after the Sandy Hook Elementary school shootings in December 2012, KXAN-TV reports.

Longview breaks ground for new gun range

Longview’s newest gun range has already broken ground and is set to open up next month. The co-owner of Top Shot Indoor Range and Guns, Jeffrey Davis, says there has been a lot to do to prepare for this and he is anticipating the grand opening of this 7,000 square foot, eight-lane shooting range. The gun range will feature a retail area for guns, ammunition and accessories. The facility will include classrooms for the fire arms safety courses that will be offered. The aspect that sets this gun range apart from others, is the ability to test out a weapon before purchasing it, Davis said of his new business.
