Smith & Wesson to pursue US Army Modular handgun system contract

On Nov. 25 Smith & Wesson Holding Corp. and General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems announced their partnership to pursue the U.S. Army’s Modular Handgun System (MHS) solicitation. The partnership aims to replace the Beretta M9 with the Smith & Wesson M&P Polymer Pistol platform as the standard sidearm of the U.S. Army.

21 states hope to overturn Maryland's gun control law

Led by West Virginia's attorney general, 21 states have joined a legal effort seeking to overturn Maryland's tough new gun control law. The Maryland statute has no effect on gun laws in their states, but the attorneys general argue in an amicus brief filed this month that Maryland's law was written too broadly and violates the Second Amendment rights of their citizens.

Legislation introduced in response to Operation Choke Point
GUNS
Legislation defining the federal government’s procedure to force a bank to end its relationship with a suspicious business has been introduced. The Financial Institution Customer Protection Act — reaction to Operation Choke Point — prohibits federal banking regulators from requesting or ordering financial institutions from terminating a customer’s account unless the regulator has material reason and writes it down.

FBI data show thousands of gun sales beat background check system

More gun sales than ever are slipping through the federal background check system — 186,000 last year, a rate of 512 gun sales a day, as states fail to consistently provide thorough, real-time updates on criminal and mental histories to the FBI. At no time of year is this problem more urgent. Black Friday opens the busiest season for gun purchases, when requests for background checks speed up to nearly two a second, testing the limits of the National Instant Criminal Background Check System, or NICS.

First look: SIG Sauer SBX pistol stabilizing brace

Competing open carry legislation could lead to showdown

Justin Delosh, legislative director for open carry advocacy group Come and Take It Texas, is getting organized to get lawmakers on board to support House Bill 195 which would make the CHL process voluntary in Texas. “It means that anybody who's legally allowed to possess a firearm will now have the choice to carry openly or concealed without having to ask the state for permission," Delosh said. It's more commonly called constitutional carry and Delosh says it's simply a civil liberty.

San Francisco school board unanimously passes measure for gun safety lessons in schools

The school board of the San Francisco School District voted to expand programs aimed at educating students about guns and violence, and further inform parents about gun safety. “Violence, and especially gun violence, is a public health issue that profoundly affects children and families in San Francisco,” said school board member who authored the measure, Matt Haney. “Guns are one of the leading causes of death among children in San Francisco, and incidents of violence have deep and long lasting impacts on school communities, affecting students and staff socially, emotionally and academically.”
