Concealed carry: Court strikes down Illinois' ban
Chicago Tribune    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The state of Illinois would have to allow ordinary citizens to carry weapons under a federal appeals court ruling issued Dec. 11, but the judges also gave lawmakers 180 days to put their own version of the law in place. In a 2-1 decision that is a major victory for the National Rifle Association, the U.S. Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals said the state's ban on carrying a weapon in public is unconstitutional. More

New legislative push for open carry gun law in Texas stirs emotions
Longview News-Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A sophomore Texarkana state representative caused a stir when he announced he would once again push for an open carry gun law when the legislative session convenes in January. Rep. George Lavender hopes to spearhead legislation that would allow residents who have been approved for concealed-weapon carrying to carry holstered pistols in the open. He was behind similar legislation that was not passed in the 2011 legislative session. Texas is one of six states that forbid open carry in all forms. More

Perry curious about why we're not No. 1 in concealed gun licenses
Austin American Statesman    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Gov. Rick Perry, with feigned outrage but sincere curiosity, mentioned to several journalists that he'd come upon a fact he finds difficult to believe. Florida, Perry said he'd heard, has more people with concealed handgun licenses than Texas does. Adam Putnam, Florida's commissioner of agriculture and consumer affairs, reported his state soon will pass the 1 million mark for concealed-carry licenses. They're doing a bang-up job in handing out the licenses in the Gunshine State. More

Charter Arms 9 mm Pitbull revolver
American Rifleman    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Last year, Charter Arms released the first in its line of rimless cartridge Pitbull revolvers chambered in .40 S&W. Although it was not the first revolver designed to chamber semi-auto cartridges without the use of moon clips, it was the first in this relatively new .40-caliber cartridge. The choice to launch the Pitbull line in .40 S&W left some scratching our heads. Out of the three most popular semi-auto defensive calibers in the U.S., including the potent .45 ACP and affordable 9 mm, .40 S&W seemed the least logical option to be the first out of the gate. Nick Ecker, President of Charter Arms, said the goal was to serve the needs of the law enforcement community first, and then follow up with 9 mm and .45 ACP versions in the future. And as promised, the 9 mm is now coming off of the assembly line. More

6 home defense carbines, 5 are NOT AR's
The Daily Caller    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Michael Piccione, a news contributor for the Daily Caller, writes: "First things first, shotguns are devastatingly powerful. Nothing can compare to the 12 gauge at close range. Even birdshot, which is still one mass of moving lead at close range, will tear a human to shreds. In my battery I have a Remington 870 and a bandoleer of slugs and buck ready to go for when the SHTF. You don't lose much with a 20 gauge at close range either and you gain some agility with a smaller gun, and more family members are likely to respond better to the 20." More

Do legally-armed citizens prevent crime?
Police One    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The 7th Circuit decision addressed a couple of separate cases, but one in particular is telling. Mary Shepard — an Illinois resident with no criminal record who is licensed to carry a concealed handgun in two other states — was prohibited by Illinois law from carrying a firearm at the time she and an 83-year-old coworker were viciously attacked by a six-foot-three-inch, 245-pound man with a violent past and a criminal record.
