TESOL applauds reintroduction of the DREAM Act in the U.S. Congress

Statement from TESOL Executive Director Rosa Aronson: On May 9 the Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act was reintroduced on the floors of both the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives. TESOL commends Senate sponsors Dick Durbin, D-Ill., Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., and Robert Menendez, D-N.J., and House sponsors Howard Berman, D-Calif., and Illeana Ros-Lehtinen, R-Fla., for their leadership in bringing this important issue forward.

Australian-born drivers say English language tests for drivers are unwarranted

Australia: New English tests introduced for would-be taxi drivers have offended Australian-born applicants who say they should not have to pay for a certificate to prove they can speak their own language. Queensland Transport and Main Roads introduced the English assessment in response to a report, which made 56 recommendations to reform the taxi industry. More

United Kingdom: A survey of 13,700 internet users across 27 European Union member countries, found that just 18 percent of respondents reported buying online in a language other than their own "frequently or all the time," while 42 percent said they never do so. English was by far the most commonly used second language, but internet users said they were much less likely to use their foreign language skills for e-commerce than they were for other activities. But in its handling of North Korean defectors, the South Korean government does virtually nothing to fill this gap in their education.
