After tragedy, Snider perseveres at Neches
Austin American-Statesman    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The Neches Lady Tigers hadn't been to the state tournament in 33 years when Andy Snider came to Neches in 2009. Three state titles later, the team's fortunes have certainly changed. The return meant something to Snider in a personal way, but it was also much more than that. His wife, Stephanie, had died from cancer in 2006, and coming home to Neches became the merciful salvation of Snider. More

Beren Academy's dream season comes to end in championship game
Houston Chronicle    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Once the sun set on the Jewish Sabbath, the Beren Academy Stars rushed to play the biggest basketball game of their lives. Two days after TAPPS amended the schedule to work around the Sabbath, the Stars came up second best to Abilene Christian in the 2A state championship. Beren's belated admission into the proceedings drew national attention, with a religious discrimination lawsuit filed by three players and three parents persuading TAPPS to revisit the matter. "We had our chance," Beren coach Chris Cole said. "The week was crazy. But in the end, I'm not going to say that had anything to do with it." More

Is it time to move the UIL basketball tournament out of Austin?
The Dallas Morning News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
If you have a rooting interest in one of the teams at this week's UIL boys state basketball tournament in Austin, and you don't have a hotel room already, good luck. Availability for rooms over the three-day basketball tournament are extremely scarce, especially over the final two days. Rates are upward of $300 a night on average, and the reason that hotels are so hard to find is the explosion in interest for both the Interactive and Film arms of the South By Southwest Conference.
