Private Practice - From Problems to Solutions
October 30 8:00AM – 5:30PM
This postgraduate session will provide an opportunity for private practice professionals to network and hear from the experts. Participants will learn best practices to incorporate cash pay procedures, perioperative testing, body contouring and other elements to expand the scope of their practice.
Mercedes Carnethon: Obesity and Diabetes: A Public Health Crisis in Hispanic/Latinos
October 31 5:15PM – 6:15PM
Hispanics comprise a large and growing segment of the U.S. population. Over 77 percent of Hispanic/Latino adults are overweight or obese, compared with 67.2 percent of non-Hispanic whites. It is estimated that 2.5 million, or 10.4 percent of Hispanic and Latino Americans aged 20 and older have diabetes. Hispanics also are more likely to have undiagnosed diabetes than non-Hispanic whites and non-Hispanic blacks. The high prevalence of obesity and diabetes in Hispanic/Latinos clearly constitutes a public health crisis and is likely the result of biological, behavioral and social factors. This symposium will guide the audience through cutting-edge population based research in the US, which is trying to better understand the causes and consequences of these disparities.
The Skinny on GLP-1: CNS Reward Pathways
November 1 3:45PM – 5:15PM
Matthew R Hayes, PhD, Diana L Williams, PhD and Christos Mantzoros, MD
Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) is a gut peptide of high clinical relevance to obesity therapy, exemplified by the FDA approval of GLP-1 analogs for weight loss. Emerging findings are unraveling the brain mechanisms through which GLP-1 analogs reduce food intake, particularly for highly palatable foods. In this session researchers will present data from both human and animal models revealing the neural mechanisms through which GLP-1 acts in the brain’s cognitive and reward circuitry to reduce food intake and body weight.

The role of genes in obesity is one of science’s great puzzles, even though researchers have learned much in recent years. They have identified dozens of genetic variants that increase the risk but are still untangling how these genes interact with other factors to help make us fat.
The experts are fairly confident about one thing, however: Except in rare instances, people genetically susceptible to obesity should not regard themselves as doomed.
Los Angeles Times
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has alerted physicians and surgeons who treat obesity that it is investigating whether there is a link between gastric balloons — new-generation weight-loss devices — and the deaths of five patients.
In an alert issued recently, the FDA said that from 2016 to the present, five “unanticipated deaths” had occurred within a month or less in patients who had liquid-filled gastric balloon systems implanted in their stomachs.
Genetic Engineering & Biotechnology News
Is it possible that fetal exposure to chemicals contained in everyday household objects such as carpets, paints or cookware could be responsible for causing obesity in children and adults? It’s a question that scientists have been asking for a number of years, and mounting evidence in animal models — as well as a few epidemiological studies — suggests that some types of environmental chemicals, known as endocrine disrupting chemicals, can affect the body’s hormonal control of hunger and satiety, interfere with normal homeostatic control mechanisms and possibly cause obesity.
