Help me help my board
By Robert C. Harris
"Help me help my board" is a lament among association executives. The cry arises because few board members have extensive knowledge of governance. Instead they are guided by myths, stay in their comfort zone ("I won't say anything my first year") or they pattern themselves after board behaviors (right or wrong). Here are some of the pleas I often hear as I plan board orientations.

5 steps to personas, prospecting, and peace of mind
MemberClicks
A new member joins your association. At first, he or she is active – reaching out to others, participating in events, and attending local meetings. But after a while, you stop seeing that member, and sooner or later, their dues disappear too. For many associations, this scenario is common. But while some member lapses are simply unavoidable, many can be prevented right from the start.

Are you leveraging your association's value trigger point?
Smooth the Path
Ask engaged members when they realized the value of the association and many can tell you the exact moment. For a few members value builds over time but for most members there is a single event or moment when it’s clear to them they made the right decision in joining. Knowing what our association’s value trigger point is provides us with more opportunities to increase value for everyone.

Why group brainstorming is a waste of time
Harvard Business Review
The most widely used method to spark group creativity is brainstorming, a technique first introduced by Alex Osborn in the 1950s. Osborn famously claimed that brainstorming should enhance creative performance by almost 50% versus individuals working on their own. Yet after six decades of independent scientific research, there is very little evidence for the idea that brainstorming produces more or better ideas than the same number of individuals would produce working independently. In fact, a great deal of evidence indicates that brainstorming actually harms creative performance, resulting in a collective performance loss that is the very opposite of synergy.
