The strategic technology assessment
Association Leadership
Whenever association professionals get together to talk, office technology comes up. And not in a good way. The conversations focus on the problems with the database, email, website and hardware. After much venting, we all blame our Association Management Software (AMS) as the source of all our problems and wring our hands about what to do. For some, the easiest solution seems to just pick a new one and hope for the best.

Can you learn to lead?
The New York Times
What does one learn at graduate business school? Business, one assumes. Or more to the point, the management of business. But peruse the website of any business school in the country and you may come away thinking that the biggest topic they teach is leadership.

Boost bottom line and member value with non-dues revenue
Abila
Non-dues revenue. It’s become sort of the Holy Grail of associations – valuable and much sought-after, but also a bit mythical. What’s not mysterious, though, is the fact that associations can no longer simply rely on membership dues to cover costs, add member value, and sustain growth. So, if you’re not generating any revenue beyond member dues and annual meeting fees, the time to explore your options is now.

What nonprofits can learn from Chipotle
By William D. Pawlucy
I was in a fast-casual Mexican restaurant the other day, Chipotle. While in line, I was thinking about how the concept developed by this and similar brands applies to service delivered by a nonprofit. What's the difference between fast-casual and full-service restaurants? Traditional, full-service restaurants are ones "that encapsulate the old-fashioned idea of going out to eat." The question I'm wondering is: Are nonprofit organizations encapsulating the old-fashioned idea of serving members the same way they were served 30-50 years ago?

Fun with financials
Partners Preceptors
Yes, you read that right – financials and fun in the same sentence. One of the most important aspects in any organization, whether for profit or not-for-profit, is the ability to maintain strong financials. For “type A” folks, just talking about financial statements gives quite the rush. However, no matter what your personality type is, it is imperative to fully understand your association’s financials.

Boycotts and association meetings: managing your organization's risk
Venable
As is often the case when a state or municipality enacts a controversial law or policy, the enactment of Indiana's Religious Freedom Restoration Act has sparked numerous calls for organizations to pull meetings and other activities out of the state as a form of protest. While an organization may face significant membership pressure to move a meeting out of a state where a boycott is underway, executives need to be mindful of how such a pull-out will affect the organization's finances.
