5 event planner cliches that are no longer true
Event Manager Blog
The event planning industry has come a long way from the binder toting days of the '80s. New and superior technology, along with the cultural and economic changes of the last two decades, have streamlined and revamped the way events are planned and experienced. And just like any other creative position, there seems to be a disconnect between what event planning looks like from the outside, and what it actually requires. Because of this, there are a lot of cliches surrounding event planning which have graduated to full-on myths.

Feeling trapped on a board

While associations seek leaders, the culture of the board may not be so welcoming. A board set in its ways, or without principles of engagement and transparency, will be a hurdle for new volunteers. What your magazine cover says about membership
Associations Now
The old saying “Don’t judge a book by its cover” is antiquated. This is the Twitter era. If you want anybody to read what you have to say, your cover better say something interesting. If you judged the magazines of the Health Care Compliance Association and its sister organization, the Society of Corporate Compliance and Ethics, by their covers, you’d get the impression that their members matter a lot.

Conference WOW moments require perpetual reinvention
Midcourse Corrections
Your mighty event team managed to transform a “what if?” idea into a five-star, conference greatest hit. The attendee WOW factor was off the charts. Now for the tough truth: WOW moments have a short shelf life. Each time they’re repeated, the buzz diminishes substantially. Before long, your competitors are running with this idea. That’s why conference organizers need to be in a perpetual state of new WOW discovery.

The real data changes every day, so there is no perfect database. However, the practice of regularly cleaning your data and appending important information can drive success for an organization.
