Association membership model: Why can't we be friends?
Avectra
In January, the Dallas Museum of Art began offering free admission and membership. Instead of a transactional business (and membership) model based on the exchange of money for services, DMA built a new model based on relationships. Like associations, museums have long had a traditional and predictable membership structure. But in the past few years, museums have tried new approaches to maintain, grow and, hopefully, deepen connections with their audience. DMA still offers higher-priced membership levels, but the Friends program is a way for them to connect with entry-level members. Could your association offer something similar to those who aren't currently interested in paying for traditional association membership benefits?

Tagoras

What associations need to know about technology
Association Adviser
Thanks to technology, the association landscape is becoming flatter, but our inboxes and digital to-do lists are becoming fatter. Perhaps that's why we're starting to see some backlash. Going forward, the winners won't necessarily be the earliest adopters, but the associations that can figure out the ideal mix of new and old technology that enables them to connect with greatest numbers of members in the formats that members are most comfortable being engaged.

The up-and-coming event news industry
By Trace Cohen
Why do people rob banks? Because that's where the money is. Why do people go to conferences? Because that's where the news is. And unlike the money in the bank, which is all kept in one central location, conference news is scattered across hundreds of exhibitors, some industry media and maybe a conference guide. So much news can come out of a conference, and yet it doesn't seem to originate from any one place digitally online.

What your association members really want
MemberClicks
It's an age-old story. People join associations with the best of intentions. Networking! Personal and professional growth! Fun, stimulating, informative events! But ultimately, in order for a member to get the most out of his or her membership, he or she has to work at it. They say they want to. You plan meetings, you take suggestions, and you get things together but when the day comes there's a lack of RSVPs and even fewer attendees. So what's the deal?

Making space for change
By Michael J. Berens
Disconnects between a leader's vision and organizational culture are all too common in organizations. However well-respected — or well-feared — a leader may be, change cannot and will not occur simply because a leader says it will. Making space for change requires modifying organizational structures and culture to create both the possibility and the opportunity for change. It is not enough just to communicate change.

Tips to navigate a leadership crossroads
Forbes
Effective leaders shoulder a lot of responsibility. They are responsible to shareholders for financial results. They are responsible to clients for quality and service. And they are responsible to employees for guidance, support and recognition. Mangers are presented with a leadership crossroads when asked to balance external expectations with anticipated results. But there's a better way for leaders to deliver results and strengthen relationships than exerting tighter control, conveying disappointment or taking over projects that have failed to meet targets.
