Finding creative ways to raise non-dues revenue
By Adrian Davis
Every year, the question of whether to renew membership begs a greater question: Does the association I belong to provide me with sufficient value? In order to create the compelling value that members desire, many associations have to generate more funds than what comes in through membership dues. A peek into some of the latest association sponsorship trends
Associations Now
More associations are reporting increased revenue from sponsorships. But the news that nearly 40 percent more associations saw an increase in this type of revenue in 2013 compared to 2011 was not terribly surprising to sponsorship expert Pamela Strother, a principal at Sponsorship Specialists. After the recession, when many associations saw membership dues and meetings revenue drop, it became increasingly imperative for them to diversify and develop more customized and well-crafted sponsorship programs, she said. 5 reasons why social learning matters so much for associations
Tagoras
Associations are, by definition, social organizations. They exist to connect people with common aims and interests. But the value of connection isn’t in paying your money and getting added to the membership roll. The value is in the knowledge that can be gained through sharing experiences and resources with others in the association’s network. This is social learning, and excellence in facilitating it is at the core of the value associations offer.

Debilitating office politics and what to do about them
The Demand Perspective
We all recognize and live with office politics of one kind or another. We mostly shrug and resign ourselves. “Oh it’s the usual politics.” “I hate politics. I don’t get involved.” But what’s behind such politics and what is their effect on an organization? Charles Spinosa, Christopher Davis and Billy Glennon, authors of an intriguing article, “Transforming crippling company politics,” point to the crippling effect of negative politics: they kill critical change programs, put managers into empty competition and open enormous fields of reputation-covering busyness, the authors say.
