Taking the time to communicate right
Association Adviser
You have helpful programs designed for your members. You serve as an advocate for your industry on Capitol Hill. Your association may even set the standard for quality in your industry by certifying businesses and individuals in their trade. None of those lofty accomplishments mean a thing if you're not telling your members — and potential members — why it should matter to them.

Cultures that embrace a culture of questioning thrive and those that fear it either fail or are doomed to mediocrity.

Convert membership into value-generating networks: How to leverage your most important asset
The Demand Perspective
What is the greatest asset an association has? Surely it’s its unparalleled access to entire groups of people that could span the globe and are already linked to each other by shared industries and professions. But associations gradually forgot their role as the original community builders and conveners, focusing instead on selling products — memberships, programs, services etc. They missed the opportunity of re-inventing their model for the knowledge age and converting the value of their relationships with members into value-generating information and e-commerce networks, leaving the field of community-based innovation to others.

You lost them at hello
By Michael J. Berens
When you greet people, how long do you shake their hand? Authorities on business etiquette suggest no more than three or four seconds. A handshake that goes on for too long can produce the opposite effect of what is intended, making the other person feel ill at ease rather than welcome. The same holds true for communication, especially spoken communication. A greeting and a few brief introductory remarks help you connect with your audience, but then it's time to get to the point — or risk losing them altogether.
