Associations: Is your job getting harder?
MemberClicks
Blame it on social media or helicopter parents, but members expect more of us these days. The one-size-fits-all model of association membership is dead. As Seth Godin said, "The riskiest thing you can do now is be safe. The safe thing to do is be at the fringes, be remarkable." Doing things as they've always been done is a recipe for extinction. But providing a customized member experience for everyone is hard work and requires resources that many associations don't have. However, it can be done.

Forbes
A 2012 study found that American companies spend almost $14 billion annually on leadership development training. There's a lot of energy and resources being spent on these programs. However, so many times, after the leadership program ends, new behaviors aren't sustained. And the Center for Creative Leadership found that 38 percent of new chief executives fail in their first 18 months on the job. So what factors make for a rich, enduring leadership development program?

Transforming from a reluctant leader into a smart leader
By Betty Boyd
Leaders are role models to the workforce. Have you ever had a leader who could never make a decision no matter how much information was at his disposal? Did you ever know a leader who took too long in her decision-making process? There are always trade-offs when making a decision. If you decide too quickly or hastily, mistakes can be made. But being risk averse can often be a bigger issue for organizations. If you are too slow, then you may miss an opportunity. When a leader becomes reluctant, the organization can become ineffective.

The benefits of educating about benefits
Event Garde

But according to a rather surprising Unum survey conducted recently, most employees don't know or understand the benefits they have. And employers are at fault, the study found. Associations generally operate with small staffs, so it's important that your employees are happy, and the survey found a correlation between good benefits education and employee happiness. In other words, an informed employee is a productive employee.

Healthier association, higher membership performance
Associations Now
In April 2013, NAADAC, the Association for Addiction Professionals, found itself in decline. NAADAC's major symptom was declining membership. Some of the causes were outdated communications methods, stale member and prospect data, and complacency in customer service. It all had to change. NAADAC took a cue from its members' profession to get back on track.
