10 things you need to know about non-dues revenue, part 2
Association Adviser
As we discussed in Part 1, there are more ways than ever for associations to communicate with members, so it’s only natural to assume there are more ways than ever for associations to make the cash register ring. But, it’s not that simple. BBC
“What are we going to be in 10 years?” It is one of the most challenging questions that any organization can ask itself. It’s also one of the hardest. If organizations really want to be successful in the years to come, their executives and boards need to put some real work into answering the question. Of course, that’s easier said than done.

8 terribly common association breaches and breakdowns
Midcourse Corrections
Sadly, and all too commonly, many associations appear to suffer from the equivalent of attention deficit disorder. If you know someone with ADD, you know what happens when he or she exerts energy in the absence of focus, goals and vision. Many associations are like this as well. They suffer from Organizational-ADD. It all starts with the executive brain — the association’s leadership. This includes volunteer leaders — advisors, board, committee chairs, committee members — and staff. What is required is leadership that pays attention to what is important, inhibiting things that will not help or hurt the organization, and staying current.

Finding the roots of true engagement
The Demand Networks
Outside our visible transactions with a favorite service provider — frequent purchases, the formal classes we attend at a university or our association’s annual conferences and journals — there is a secret web of personal motivations and values that drive our loyalty to them. Sure we may love our association’s mission or the prestige of our university but what converts us into committed members, customers or donors lies in the informal, personal, unique experiences and relationships that resonate with our motivations and give us outcomes that make a difference in some aspect of our lives.

Tagoras
Clearly we are still in the early days of virtual events as a trend, but the use of this format across a diverse range of organizations — and its continued use by most who have tried it — suggests that virtual events will become a mainstay of association education and events going forward.

The mantle of leadership is passing to millennials — get ready
Forbes
There are now more millennials than baby boomers in the workforce. Further, 50 percent of those millennials are already in leadership positions. Unfortunately they’re not ready. They have not received the training and development they need; and especially have not received the experience-based learning they need to develop the leadership skills that are most important in the world they are creating. It’s time for the baby boomers to stop fretting about managing millennials and to focus on developing those millennials’ leadership skills.
