Planning for your association's planning
By Maria Huntley
I had a serious case of deja vu recently as I sat in and observed a board planning retreat for an association in which I had little background. I quickly realized that I had been in this meeting before, at least a hundred times. And at the end of the day, one of the volunteer leaders commented that they just spent the day talking about the exact same things they talked about the previous year. He questioned what they can do to make sure the discussion doesn't continue into next year's retreat. That is a great question.

How associations can tap into breaking news
Associations across the US and around the world have to struggle for media attention, which seems strange because association leaders are truly the experts in their field. For every news story that crosses the papers, TV, radio, and Internet there’s an association pro out there who can comment intelligently on the piece and add some perspective.

Staying connected to your members during the busy holiday season
Ready or not, the holiday season is upon us. It’s time to talk about the best ways to keep your members engaged with your organization during the holidays. This is the time of year when people are taking off work, traveling, shopping and are often scheduled to the max with school concerts, holiday parties and family visits. But that doesn’t mean that associations and nonprofits should go completely dark with their communications.

How to control your board discussion and avoid chaos
Board meetings should be about maximizing the amount of time you have with your key directors to debate the issues that are most critical to your business and getting input and buy-in to your key decisions. Even the most well-meaning board members will be undisciplined about time management and discussing what’s on their mind rather than what’s most important to you. It’s your job not to let this happen.

Get more benefit from your benefits
By Michael J. Berens
In my many years of conducting and analyzing member satisfaction surveys, I was always baffled by how few members were aware of, much less took advantage of, an association's member benefits. Recruitment materials usually list a plethora of discounts, privileges and affiliations exclusive to members as an enticement to join. Yet, the record shows that most members do not take advantage of most benefits. So is the problem with the product or with the delivery?

Our dangerous obsession with external recognition
Harvard Business Review Blog Network
This obsession with external recognition is now entering our professional lives. Every day, even the most disciplined entrepreneurs, executives, and consultants are becoming addicted to the powerful endorphins associated with heightened visibility. They invest disproportionate time and effort into advancing their own personal fame bubbles at the expense of broader goals and potentially threaten their careers as a result. Teens posting selfies on Instagram is one thing. But when visibility trumps vision in the working world, there are several dangerous consequences that can arise.

3 things top leaders do to stay authentic
When you’re authentic and value-driven, you choose to align your actions with what you believe in. And those who are unsure find themselves in sticky situations because they don’t know who they are or whom they’re trying to please. Beyond that, they end up reacting to stress, rather than choosing their responses (another thing mindfulness meditation can address).
