A bill sponsored in Maryland by seven separate delegates proposes that Maryland adopt version two of the International Green Construction Code in its entirety. As reported by my good friend Stuart Kaplow, this version of IGCC incorporates the upcoming Standard 189.1 for High Performance Buildings currently being developed by the American Society of Heating Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Engineers. Barry Andrews Homes' Murphy's Run development earned the distinction in March as the 2,000th project to be certified by the NAHB Research Center under the National Green Building Standard. Under construction in Cecil County, Md., north of Baltimore, Murphy's Run is the 12th certified community in the country. The 42 homes also will be certified, to the Silver level, as well as to Energy Star. An NAHB certified green home can be built for almost the same price as a standard home, contends Bossert Builders, Inc. in Kailua, Hawaii. To prove the point, the company's owners, Nick and Leanne Bossert, began renovation work on a modest home in O'ahu that had been destroyed due to an electrical fire. The owners of the home contracted Bossert Builders to rebuild their home as a certified green home, operating within the budget that had been allocated by the insurance company.
