South Dakota GF&P proceeds on plan to reduce deer harvests
Black Hills Pioneer
South Dakota's state Game, Fish and Parks Commission took steps to sharply reduce the deer harvest this fall. The commissioners followed recommendations from biologists for the state Wildlife Division. The largest changes eliminate thousands of tags, mostly for antlerless deer. The goal is rebuild deer populations in many areas, especially the tiers of counties along South Dakota's eastern and western borders.

Oregon: License fees must rise as hunting, fishing is down

With hunting and fishing participation at its lowest levels in Oregon in 30 years and operating costs on the rise, the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife is facing a projected $32 million gap as it works to create a budget for the 2015-17 biennium.

Bighorn sheep killed after mingling with domestic sheep
Great Falls Tribune
Montana state game wardens killed three wild bighorn sheep that mingled with domestic sheep near Missoula to prevent them from spreading disease to other wild bighorns. Fish, Wildlife and Parks spokeswoman Vivaca Crowser says the city of Missoula contracts with a shepherd to graze sheep on land around the valley to control leafy spurge.

University's wild sheep study gets $1.2 million grant

When biologists began a transplant project in the Madison Range of Montana last winter, they didn't know it would turn into part of a comprehensive study that could help preserve wild sheep throughout the West. Next winter, four Montana State University researchers and dozens of Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks biologists and volunteers will begin a six-year study of bighorn sheep in an effort to determine why some herds grow and remain healthy while others fail to thrive.

Mountain goat studies continuing at Glacier National Park

Stylish collars and perhaps a splash of paint will mark some mountain goats this summer at Glacier National Park in Montana, where an ongoing study of the animals is moving into its second year. Style aside, the first year of research already is producing results, as wildlife biologists say the park has two types of goats — those that are "habituated" and those that are "wild" goats.
