This year's Global Pet Expo pet industry trade show, held March 25 to 27 in Orlando, Fla., drew record crowds, according to organizers. Franck's Compounding Lab of Ocala, Fla., reported May 17, 2010 that it has voluntarily suspended all compounding drugs for veterinary use, pending the outcome of discussions with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The New Mexico Department of Game and Fish has proposed a rulemaking amending existing regulations regarding the importation of non-native species. The proposed rule creates a "species importation list" that would require permits for importation of listed species — regardless of whether the animals were wild caught or captive bred. Ownership of these species as pets without a permit would be banned. The proposal does not clarify the status of banned species already within New Mexico as pets or those that are being propagated in the state. All comments on this proposal should be received by the Department no later than June 4. The Department will also be holding a public Commission meeting on June 3. Louisiana House Bill 313 would change dog kennel license fee levels set forth in current law from a maximum fee to a minimum fee, therefore allowing a municipality or parish to set fees as high as they wish. In addition to sending out more warning letters and stepping up enforcement activity, the Food and Drug Administration wants health professionals to do more to police drug marketing and advertising. The agency's "Bad Ad" program urges doctors and other health professionals to report any false or misleading ads or inappropriate marketing pitches. Depending on one's point of view, the program is either an efficient way to extend FDA's oversight capabilities, or just one more attempt by over-zealous regulators to stifle free speech. More
