Drug may revolutionize control of dog overpopulation

A Flagstaff, Ariz., scientist may have discovered a nonsurgical way to sterilize dogs — an advance that would revolutionize animal shelter medicine and address many states' canine overpopulation problem in the process, according to one veterinary expert. Dr. Loretta Mayer was looking for a way to artificially induce menopause in mice so they could be used to study human diseases when she and another scientist developed a drug that they realized also could be used to sterilize female dogs, removing the need for painful and expensive surgery. Petfinder.com announces top airlines for pet travel

Petfinder.com released its annual review of pet-friendly airlines. This year, Petfinder.com expanded its review to include Canadian airlines in addition to the United States-based airlines researched in years past. Petfinder.com chose the airline that proved to be the best in six categories. In addition, all pet-friendly airlines which made the ranking were required to have zero pet deaths in the past reported year according to official government reports. More



Glendale, Calif., considers ordinance to ban sale of dogs and cats

The Glendale, California City Council voted unanimously at its June 14 meeting to draft an ordinance which would ban the retail sale of commercially bred dogs and cats in the city. The Council will vote again on the adoption of the ordinance once language is drafted. A date for that vote has yet to be determined. More

Animal experts at UN-backed conference are 'concerned' about trade in animals and skins

Animal experts from 50 countries meeting at a United Nations-backed conference expressed concern about the sustainability of current levels of trade in snake skins used in luxury products and another 20 animal species used in biomedical research, the food industry or as pets. More than 200 scientists conferring in the 25th meeting of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora animal committee in Geneva agreed on technical recommendations to control animal trade in several species.
