Nestlé creates TV ad for pet food which 'speaks' to dogs

Food company Nestlé Purina produced the 24-second advert, selling Beneful dog food, using a high-pitched whistle, which only dogs can hear. Behavioral experts from the U.S. researched the technique of dog-only frequencies, studying which sounds would have the most effect on canines in front of the television screen. More

European Pet Food Industry Federation revises pet nutrient guidelines

The European Pet Food Industry Federation, FEDIAF, has revised its nutrient guidelines for dogs and cats. These nutrient guidelines are often used by pet food manufacturers when formulating recipes. For the 2011 edition, available for download on the FEDIAF site, the federation collaborated with scientists in the academic world to form the Scientific Advisory Board. The board will advise FEDIAF on how to further improve its guidelines to ensure they reflect the most current scientific data and research. More

Merial to import limited quantities of Immiticide from Europe

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration will allow Merial of Duluth, Ga., to import limited quantities of Immiticide (melarsomine dihydrochloride) from its European supplier. Immiticide is the only FDA-approved drug to kill adult Dirofilaria immitis, the worm that causes heartworm disease in canines. Merial experienced a technical issue at the plant where the FDA-approved version of the drug is manufactured, and its inventory ran out in August. More
