Prisons chief says he can close Nevada State Prison without approval

Nevada's oldest prison should be closed because staff cuts have made it a safety risk, the state's corrections director said. Furthermore, Howard Skolnik said he has the power under state law to close the 140-year-old Nevada State Prison in Carson City, one of the oldest prisons in the nation, and doesn't need the approval of the prisons board or the Legislature to do so.
