Surgical site infection risk in patients with diabetes
from Lower Extremity Review
Diabetes mellitus (DM) is an increasing challenge for the medical community. It is estimated that 23.6 million people are afflicted in the United States; accounting for approximately 7.8 percent of the population. Nearly one third of persons with diabetes are unaware that they have DM. Often this disease is not diagnosed until patients present with complications of the disease. The incidence of DM has increased 30 percent over the past five years, and nearly 25 percent of the United States population over the age of 60 has DM.
