Technology tells whether bridges are 'dead or alive'
It is a paradox of our world today that as technology transforms so much so fast our most fundamental infrastructure — roads, bridges, rail — remains largely as it was when it was built over seventy years ago. And our methods of maintenance and condition assessment are largely unchanged as well. Absent adequate funding, risk assessment becomes central to prioritizing projects. The next few decades will require countless choices that are only now beginning to be understood. It is in this arena that technology is offering promising new ways to better understand our geriatric bridge inventory.
