Chinese delegation, wanting to visit an American trade school, tours Bullard Havens

from Connecticut Post

Over the din of revving engines in the automotive shop at Bullard-Havens Technical High School in Bridgeport, Conn., Principal Viviana Santana explained to a delegation of visitors from China that students spend 90 days each school year learning trades and 90 days pursing academic studies. What about the rest of the time, Zhang Pengcheng, deputy director of the higher education division of Shandong Provincial Education Department, asked through interpreter Jai Lei. A puzzled look crossed Santana's faced before she realized he must have meant the summer. "Vacation," she explained. The students get all of July and most of August off, she said. It was a foreign concept for this group of six education officials, who had one opportunity during a 10-day visit to Canada and the United States to visit a American trade school. They picked Bullard-Havens at the suggestion of Daniel W. Gregg, a former director of social studies for the state Department of Education. He is now director of international programs for the Connecticut Association of Schools. more
