Independent grocers face voracious marketplace
from Lansing State Journal
The recent closings of three locally owned grocery stores reflect a traditional grocery sector struggling to compete with big-box stores and the growing number of pharmacies, convenience stores and other shops that have added more food to their lineups. Lansing, Mich. based L&L Food Centers in November closed two Lansing locations as well as the Mor For Less discount grocery in DeWitt Township. L&L closed another one of its namesake stores in DeWitt Township in April. Meanwhile, bigger players have beefed up their food lines or cut prices as they vie for Lansing-area shoppers.
