It's important for utilities to have a sense of how quickly rooftop solar is likely to arrive in their service territory. When it shows up in quantity, it has big impacts on the distribution grid. Just ask the folks at San Diego Gas & Electric, which is struggling mightily with several feeder lines that have lots of solar. On the other hand, "beware the hype" seems to be the mantra of today's wary electricity consumer, as we saw with smart meters in Northern California.
