Pipelines, black swans and data governance
from Vector 1
On Sept. 9, 2010, a gas transmission pipeline rupture in San Bruno, Calif., killed eight people and caused extensive property damage. The subsequent National Transportation Safety Board investigation revealed that some records in the operator's Geographic Information System were inaccurate. The finding is significant because federal law requires pipeline operators to perform data-driven risk analysis as a part of federally mandated pipeline integrity management.
