Florida church reaches out to homeless
from The Tampa Tribune
It's a mix of the haves and have-nots Sunday mornings at Hyde Park United Methodist Church in Tampa, Fla. As well-dressed members park their SUVs, BMWs and late-model Toyotas in the lot before the 8:30 a.m. service, they exchange greetings with men and women in thrift-store castoffs, lugging their worldly belongings in garbage bags and backpacks. Some walk; others lean their old bicycles up against the curb by the church. They come here every week for the only hot free meal offered downtown on Sundays — at least one that meets approval by Tampa police, city officials and homeless organizations.
