Protecting Property Rights on the Web: Thoughts on the Protect IP Act

Over the centuries, civilized societies have learned that certain behaviors are harmful and destructive, and so societies have set up structures and institutions, both voluntary and compulsory, to encourage behavior that is beneficial to society, and especially to discourage behavior that is harmful to society. Given our understanding of basic protections for civil society in the analogue world, it would be strange to argue that the best way for online society to flourish is to carve out the internet as a zone free of such basic protections.
