Air industry faces public's perception of safety
from The New York Times
With new planes — like the A380, which entered commercial service in 2007, or the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, which carried its first passengers last year — the discovery of design weaknesses and performance issues is quite common early in the life of an aircraft. What has changed is the availability of this type of information for a public that until quite recently heard about air safety only after a publicly reported safety lapse or, worse, a crash.
