Civilian to take reins as CEO for first time in organization's 116-year history
The Army & Air Force Exchange Service's leadership will undergo an historic transformation as it welcomes its first civilian chief executive officer/director.
The Defense Department has instructed the Exchange to convert the commanding general's position to a non-military CEO/director position, marking the first time in the Exchange's 116-year history that a civilian will lead the organization. Chief Operating Officer Mike Howard will take over as acting CEO/Director as the organization's Board of Directors seeks a permanent replacement.
The "Change of Responsibility" ceremony will also serve as the official retirement ceremony for the Exchange's current commander, Maj. Gen. Bruce Casella, after more than 36 years of service.
