Health IT Safety Plan proposes code of conduct for EHR vendors

The Office of the National Coordinator issued the Health IT Safety Plan on Dec. 21, asking software vendors and caregivers to work together to prevent harm to patients caused by faulty electronic records. The report, open for public comment until Feb. 4, 2013, does not propose a regulation or federal requirement to report computer mistakes that pose a risk to patients. "We are saying to the vendors: Step up and prove your ability to create a code of conduct that would be enforceable, that would bind you voluntarily to reporting safety events," Farzad Mostashari, MD, the Obama administration's coordinator for health information technology, said about the report. That doesn't go far enough, said Arthur Levin, director of the Center for Medical Consumers, which promotes safety and effectiveness in healthcare. "These are very baby steps," said Levin. more
