Minister Lebel's response on Mascouche, National Airports Policy
By Kevin Psutka, COPA president and CEO
After reading my letter to the Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities and then read Minister Lebel's response, you will see it is clear that the federal government does not see the need for a National Airports Policy review that would address the decline of General Aviation in Montreal and elsewhere. Despite the disappearance of reliever airports in Montreal, Toronto, Edmonton and elsewhere, the minister is confident that local governments will make decisions that will protect the system of reliever airports. I believe that most local government never consider this as part of their mandate when making decisions about the future of their airports but Minister Lebel believes otherwise and is content to watch reliever airports in our major cities disappear. It remains to be seen at what point he may perhaps develop policy and programs to address the current trend. As we all know, once airports disappear it is very difficult to create new ones.
