Certified Emergency Manager Program recognized in Thomas Drabek's newest book
The Human Side of Disaster, Second Edition
, by Thomas E. Drabek, he discusses professionalism in emergency management (Chapter 12, Subchapter beginning on page 278). Drabek states "An important dimension of this evolving process is the 'Certified Emergency Manager' (CEM®) program administered by IAEM (page 281). The CEM® designation requires candidates to meet a high standard of professional benchmarks necessary within the emergency management field." Drabek further cites IAEM CEO and executive director Elizabeth Armstrong in the book and provides a short history of the CEM® program. He notes with the expanding knowledge base for the emergency management industry, there has been a "rise in the number and legitimacy of professional associations" and parallels IAEM to organizations such as the American Medical Association or the American Bar Association. IAEM is proud of being included in the chapter on Change Agents. Drabek is a plenary speaker at the upcoming IAEM Annual Conference & EMEX 2013, Oct. 25-30, at the Silver Legacy Hotel and Reno Events Center, in Reno, Nev.
