School bus breath test locks for drivers could cost $100 million
from Times Union
New York legislators are proposing that school buses be equipped with ignition interlocks. Similar to a Breathalyzer, an interlock installed in a vehicle requires the operator to breathe into it to prove that he or she is not intoxicated before the ignition will work. The bill was prompted by several accidents involving allegedly impaired bus drivers. There have been at least four since October on Long Island alone — including one in which a bus ran into a house.
