New initiative

In the aftermath of deadly violence at a school in Newtown, Conn., last December, NAPT President Alexandra Robinson invited Charlie Hood, state director of Pupil Transportation in Florida; Kathleen Furneaux, executive director of the Pupil Transportation Safety Institute; Gail Wilson Hyser president of Wilson's Bus Service Inc., in Pasadena, Maryland and a director at large of the National School Transportation Association; Denny Coughlin, president of School Bus Training Company in Minneapolis, Minn.; and NAPT Board member David Anderson, director of transportation for the Adams 12 Five Star School District in Colorado to serve as the Steering Committee of an initiative to develop products and/or services that will enhance the national and local conversations about enhanced safety and security, especially involving schools and children.

The committee is seeking feedback about what communities and transporters are currently doing as well as thoughts about what more we could do to increase the safety and security of school buses. They have developed and are poised to release a survey that has been designed to get a sense of how different parts of the country are thinking and responding to these issues. Additional information and a link to the survey will be included in next week's News Brief. more
