John Barry, Major General (RET) to lead LED program, NAPT workshop

NAPT is pleased to announce John Barry as the keynote speaker of the NAPT LED (Leading Every Day) Initiative at the NAPT Summit on Saturday, Oct. 19 from 8 a.m.-5 p.m.. He will also present at a Summit workshop on Sunday afternoon.

A former superintendent of Aurora Public Schools, Barry served in the Air Force for over 30 years as a combat veteran, fighter pilot/USAF "Top Gun" graduate and Military Assistant to the Secretary of Defense. He retired in 2004 as a "2 Star", Major General, and he served his last tour on active duty as Board Member and Executive Director for the Space Shuttle Columbia Accident Investigation.

His LED presentation will focus on leadership lessons derived from his work on the Space Shuttle project, and how this information from complex organizations outside of education can be readily applied to the K-12 arena.

The NAPT LED Initiative is a unique opportunity for NAPT members to further their professional expertise. There is an additional $100 fee to attend this pre-conference event.

Barry will also participate in a workshop on Sunday, Oct. 20 in our Safety & Security track. His "Deploying a Successful Crisis Management Plan," stems from a response model that he developed — and was utilized by emergency responders during the Aurora shooting in a Colorado movie theatre July 20, 2012, while he was the Aurora Public Schools Superintendent. The APS (Aurora Public Schools) Crisis Management Plan is an integrated school and community approach. APS's five-phase Crisis and Disaster Recovery Plan has since become the gold standard for districts.

Barry is an Honor graduate of the USAF Academy with a double major in International Affairs and Political Science, received his Master's in Public Administration from Oklahoma University, was a White House Fellow in 1986-1987, attended the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard on a fellowship in 1993-1994 and is a graduate of the Broad Superintendent Academy in 2004. more
