US Supreme Court thwarts California governor on prison crowding

The U.S. Supreme Court has rejected Gov. Jerry Brown's challenge of an order forcing the state to cut its prison population by nearly 10,000 inmates to improve medical and mental health care. The court's one-line dismissal stated only that the court lacked the jurisdiction to step in.
