National test scores show slight math, reading increases for American students

American students continued glacial improvements in reading and math at the fourth grade and eighth grade levels, according to national results. In math, 27 percent of eighth graders were found proficient, up from 13 percent in 1990. In reading, 32 percent of eighth graders were proficient, up from 26 percent in 1992. U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan called the results "absolutely encouraging."
