First-of-it-kind U.S. preparedness index shows great strengths and challenges in protecting nation's health during disasters
On Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2013, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials (ASTHO), along with 25 other stakeholder organizations, including IAEM-USA, released the National Health Security Preparedness Index (NHSPI). The index offers a snapshot of national preparedness to demonstrate progress and identify areas where greater improvement is needed. Specifically, the NHSPI gives information on how well states and the nation are prepared for public health and other emergencies. The goal is to assess where we are as a nation, and help guide efforts to improve public health systems and achieve a higher level of health security preparedness. Future versions of the Index look to include other sectors and key concepts influencing national health security.
