Liposome-bupivacaine showing promise in postoperative pain management

Postoperative pain management is necessary to prevent mortality and to improve general body function after surgery. Opioids are commonly used to reduce postsurgical pain. However, they are associated with many side effects. The potential to be able to provide a long duration of analgesic effect with a single drug dose at the time of surgery is considered as important. In a recent study in the Journal of Pain Research, a formulation of bupivacaine and liposome was developed to be applied for a prolonged postsurgical pain relief, which was less toxic as compared to free bupivacaine. more
