Meeting the needs of children

Vicki Rose has sat in the front office of Thompson Elementary School in Arlington every day for seven years, working as the administrative assistant. "We know there are students who, every day, they're coming in hungry," said Rose. At Thompson, one in four students qualifies for the federal free and reduced lunch program, a program that reimburses school districts for the cost of providing breakfast and lunch at a reduced price for students whose families have applied. Some teachers keep extra snacks in their classroom granola bars, bags of pretzels, juice usually at their own expense. Sometimes, they walk with students down to the cafeteria to grab a bite to eat.
