Retired naval veteran John Brennan from North Sydney, was vividly recalling that cloudy afternoon back in May 1945, less than one week after German forces had officially surrendered to bring the European theatre of war to a close. Three days earlier, U-889 had been spotted by another patrol aircraft in the North Atlantic south of Newfoundland. It was steaming on the surface and was flying a black flag of surrender.
