Lowe's $6.5 million settlement provides 4 lessons for firms working with independent contractors

A $6.5 million settlement between Lowe's Home Centers and a class of its home improvement contractors was recently approved by a federal court judge in California. The contractors claim that they had been misclassified as independent contractors instead of employees. The settlement of this lawsuit permits us to focus on four takeaways (i.e., lessons) for other businesses that rely upon the use of independent contractors to supplement their workforce or that utilize an independent contractor or 1099 model.
