Lupus: Hospitalizations for infections continue to rise

The rate of hospitalization for serious infections among patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) has been on the rise in recent decades, and has increased to a greater extent than for individuals without SLE, a national study found. In 1996 the age-adjusted relative risk of hospitalization for pneumonia among SLE patients was 5.7 (95 percent CI 5.5-6) compared with the general population, while the relative risk for admission for urinary tract infection was 9.8 (95 percent CI 9.1-10.7), according to researchers. more
