US Sen. Bob Casey aims for Washington to help reduce school suspensions

from The Patriot-News

U.S. Sen. Bob Casey is going after school suspensions. Casey, D-Penn., recently introduced a bill aimed at reducing the rate of student suspension across the nation's schools. Casey's bill — Keep Kids in School Act — specifically takes aim at the discrepancies in the nation's suspension rates. Students of color and students with disabilities, Casey noted, are disproportionately suspended at higher rates than their white peers. Black students are suspended and expelled at a rate three times higher than white students and Latino students are also suspended at a higher rate. Students with disabilities are more than twice as likely to be suspended as those without. more
