Barbara Gray is an associate professor and chief librarian at the City University of New York (CUNY) Graduate School of Journalism, where she teaches research methods. She is the former director of news research at The New York Times, where she is still a research consultant. Gray holds a master's degree in library and information science from Long Island University's Palmer School, and a Master of Arts in liberal studies from the CUNY Graduate Center. She is writing a biography of 19th-century criminal Sophie Lyons.
