ASJA has awarded its prestigious Conscience in Media Award to three American freelance journalists: James Foley, Steven Sotloff and Austin Tice. All three men were abducted in Syria, which the Committee to Protect Journalists has called the greatest danger to working journalists. Foley and Sotloff were killed by ISIS in 2014, and Austin Tice, abducted in 2012, remains missing. "These three men represent the highest values of journalism: courage, sacrifice and a firm commitment to the truth," said Randy Dotinga, president of ASJA. "Their bravery and dedication is especially inspiring to us as fellow independent writers."

"The Conscience in Media award recognizes journalists who knowingly have endured great personal costs while pursuing the highest tenets of their profession," said Sally Wendkos Olds, interim chair of ASJA's First Amendment Committee. This selective award has been presented only 11 times since 1975.

The awards will be presented at 9 a.m. Aug. 28 at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., in conjunction with A Capital Event. more
